Pedal Break Apartments feature 132 market-rate units on .6 acres in downtown Eugene, Oregon. The development caters to low and middle-income active professionals and graduate students by providing units with low square footage, designed with the cycling community in mind. A modern, industrial aesthetic, inspired by bikes, helps give a strong character to the building, creating a sense of novelty and attraction. The exterior circulation system bridges over the 12th Avenue bike path, and encourages physical movement by way of a central spiral staircase, and a long ramp on the main facade that leads to the podium level.
Units are designed for cross- ventilation, and contain smaller living spaces to keep rental costs low. Street facades are outfitted with custom port windows which fit into a rain screen system built on wood light frame. Two and three-bedroom units have curved balconies, while the top floor studio lofts have large sit-in windows.
